TAC is honored to welcome Ireri Andrea Muñiz Ortega as our Artist-in-Residence July through December 2026.
Muñiz is a textile artist and community connector from Mexico, now living and creating in Madison, Wisconsin. Her work explores both traditional and contemporary textile techniques – the quiet, meditative space of solo making, and the dynamic energy that blooms when we create in community. Over time, she has come to deeply value artisanal and creative processes, recognizing how they’re shaped by the traditions, worldview, and culture of each community, and is especially interested in how materials can be reinterpreted through a contemporary lens – how the present moment can transform what we make and how we make it. Her curiosity and love for the tactile experience of textiles continue to guide her toward new ways of creating and sharing. Her work explores themes of identity, memory, heritage, and belonging.
Muñiz has led workshops on Mexican culture and embroidery in both English and Spanish, and has organized creative spaces where people come together to learn, make, and share. These collective spaces are essential to her practice, places where craft creates community and community creates craft.
TAC’s Artist-in-Residence program is funded through grants from Ruth Foundation for the Arts and Endres Manufacturing Company Foundation.
Community Engagement at TAC
Muñiz’s residency work includes public programming at TAC as well as programming with community members off site at Bayview Community Center and La Follette High School. Her programming will use photography, embroidery, natural dyes, and collaborative making as tools for storytelling and connection.
Programs include:
A drop-in community art project, open to all who visit TAC during public hours early September through mid December 2026.
Bilingual hands-on workshops with Angelica Contreras and Yesi Coria. (Details below.)
A 2027 culminating event that will exhibit the outcomes of the projects with the Bayview Community Center and La Follette High School, as well as the collaborative project created at TAC. The event (date to be announced) will invite all participants, families, and community members to gather and celebrate the work together while sharing food, drinks, and music.

Saturday, September 12, 10am-12pm: MÁSCARAS EN COLLAGE / COLLAGED MASKS
Led by guest teaching artist Angelica Contreras, this bilingual workshop invites participants to explore emotions, reconnect with their identity, and build creative confidence through collage portrait and mask-making. This is a free workshop.Saturdays, September 19 and 26, 9am-12pm: TALLER BILINGÜE DE TINTES NATURALES Y TEJIDO CON TOTOMOXTLE (HOJA DE MAÍZ) / Bilingual Workshop on Natural Dyes and Totomoxtle (Corn Husk) Weaving
In this two-session bilingual workshop, led by Mexican artists Yesica Coria and Ireri Andrea Muñiz Ortega, participants will explore corn husks as an artistic and craft material, connecting with ancestral traditions through creative and sustainable processes. Both dyeing and weaving techniques will be taught at an introductory level, providing a first experience with these practices and the foundational knowledge needed to continue exploring them independently. This is a free workshop.

Muñiz es una artista textil y facilitadora comunitaria de México que actualmente vive y crea en Madison, Wisconsin. Su obra explora tanto las técnicas textiles tradicionales como las contemporáneas: el espacio tranquilo y meditativo de la creación en solitario y la energía dinámica que surge cuando creamos en comunidad. Con el tiempo, ha llegado a valorar profundamente los procesos artesanales y creativos, reconociendo cómo estos se ven moldeados por las tradiciones, la visión del mundo y la cultura de cada comunidad, y le interesa especialmente cómo los materiales pueden reinterpretarse desde una perspectiva contemporánea: cómo el momento presente puede transformar lo que creamos y cómo lo creamos. Su curiosidad y su amor por la experiencia táctil de los textiles siguen guiándola hacia nuevas formas de crear y compartir. Su obra explora temas como la identidad, la memoria, el patrimonio y el sentido de pertenencia.

El programa de artistas residentes de TAC se financia mediante subvenciones de la Fundación Ruth para las Artes y la Fundación Endres Manufacturing Company.
Participación comunitaria en el TAC
El trabajo de Muñiz durante su residencia incluye actividades públicas en el TAC, así como actividades con miembros de la comunidad fuera de las instalaciones, en el Centro Comunitario Bayview y la Preparatoria La Follette. Sus actividades utilizarán la fotografía, el bordado, los tintes naturales y la creación colaborativa como herramientas para contar historias y establecer vínculos.
Los programas incluyen:
Un proyecto artístico comunitario de participación libre, abierto a todas las personas que visiten TAC durante el horario de atención al público desde principios de septiembre hasta mediados de diciembre de 2026.

Un evento de clausura en 2027 en el que se expondrán los resultados de los proyectos con el Centro Comunitario de Bayview y la Preparatoria La Follette, así como el proyecto colaborativo creado en el TAC. El evento (fecha por anunciar) invitará a todas las personas participantes, familias y miembros de la comunidad a reunirse y celebrar juntes el trabajo realizado, mientras comparten comida, bebidas y música.

Se enseñarán técnicas tanto de teñido como de tejido a nivel introductorio, lo que proporcionará una primera experiencia con estas prácticas y los conocimientos básicos necesarios para seguir explorándolas de forma independiente. Este taller es gratuito.
